Unico HVAC System

Whole-house heating, cooling and ventilation with the Unico HVAC system

The Unico System is a small-duct, high-velocity HVAC system that provides whole-house heating, cooling, dehumidification and air cleaning from a single heat pump-fed unit. It is designed for homes that want complete climate control without the need for radiators, underfloor heating or separate air-conditioning units.

Because it uses small flexible ducts instead of large sheet-metal ductwork, Unico is especially popular in period properties, listed buildings and luxury homes where space for conventional ducting is limited. It is fully compatible with modern heat pumps, giving homeowners one complete system with a single controller.

The system draws on a central air handler connected to a heat pump or chiller, distributing conditioned air through small, unobtrusive outlets in ceilings, walls or floors. This makes it a practical option for retrofits as well as new-build and renovation projects where a discreet, high-performance solution is needed.

Why choose a Unico HVAC system?

The main benefits of the Unico system for homes, period properties and renovation projects.

R

Retrofit-friendly ducting

Small flexible supply tubes can be routed through existing walls, floors and ceilings, making installation far easier than conventional ductwork.

R

Ideal for listed and period properties

The compact ducts avoid the need for major building work, making Unico a strong option for listed buildings and older homes.

R

No radiators required

Unico provides a complete heating and cooling solution from one system, freeing up wall space normally taken by radiators.

R

Heating and cooling in one system

Paired with an air source heat pump, Unico delivers both heating and cooling, along with excellent air distribution throughout the property.

R

Superior dehumidification

During cooling, Unico provides whole-house dehumidification, helping rooms feel comfortable at slightly higher temperatures.

R

Quiet, even comfort

Insulated ductwork and sound-treated air handlers keep the system quiet, while small, discreet outlets deliver even temperatures without noticeable draughts.

How the Unico system works

Unico is built around a central air handler, usually located in a loft, plant room or cupboard, connected to an indoor coil linked to a heat pump, chiller or other heating and cooling source. A main insulated plenum feeds small flexible supply tubes, typically around 50 to 65 mm in internal diameter, out to small round or slotted outlets in ceilings, walls or floors.

Rather than blowing large volumes of air through big grilles, Unico delivers small jets of conditioned air at high velocity, creating an effect known as aspiration. Room air is gently drawn into the air stream and mixed, giving very even temperatures with minimal hot or cold spots and none of the draughts associated with many conventional systems.

High-quality commissioning is essential to achieve the expected comfort and low noise levels. The air handler can be paired with a suitable air-to-water coil or other compatible arrangement, allowing the heat pump to provide space heating, cooling, excellent air distribution and whole-house dehumidification, making it one of the most elegant HVAC solutions available for high-end renovation and architect-designed homes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Unico system?

Unico is a small-duct, high-velocity HVAC system that provides whole-house heating, cooling, dehumidification and air handling using a heat pump, chiller or other compatible source, all through one controller.

How is Unico different from a conventional ducted system?

Instead of large sheet-metal ductwork, Unico uses small flexible tubes and discreet outlets, making it much easier to install in existing walls, floors and ceilings without major building work.

Is Unico suitable for listed or period properties?

Yes. Because the ducts are so compact, Unico is a popular choice for listed buildings, period properties and homes with limited space for conventional ductwork.

Does Unico still need radiators?

No. Unico is designed to provide a complete heating and cooling solution from a single system, so radiators and separate air-conditioning units are not required.

Can Unico provide both heating and cooling?

Yes. When paired with a heat pump or suitable air-to-water coil, Unico delivers space heating, cooling and whole-house dehumidification from the same system.

Is the Unico system noisy?

No. Insulated ductwork and sound-treated air handlers keep operation quiet, though correct commissioning is important to achieve the expected low noise levels.

Does Unico need professional installation and commissioning?

Yes. High-quality commissioning is essential to achieve the comfort levels and low noise performance the system is designed for.

Is Unico compatible with heat pumps and other renewable systems?

Yes. Unico is designed to work with modern heat pumps and can be combined with other Proton Energy renewable heating and cooling systems as part of a complete solution.
